Naureen Shaba Khan*, Ashwini Kumar Dixit, Rajendra Mehta

ABSTRACT

Nanoparticle research is the burning area of present time due to their incomparable and unique properties. Silver being used as drug since ancient time and medicinal plants, the incredible gift of nature are directly linked as a remedy in diverse varieties of diseases. Their combination produces a peerless drug. Keeping in view the aforesaid facts, present investigation has been carried out to biologically synthesize the silver nanoparticles from Bacopa monnieri L., and to assess its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (Gm +ve) and E. Coli (Gm –ve) bacterial species. Silver nanoparticle were synthesized by employing a single step synthesis method of Bio-reduction and were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy and SEM analysis to confirm Ag NPs synthesis. The antibacterial study was carried out by following Kirby- Bauer’s Well diffusion assay method. Bacopa monnieri Ag NPs extract was compared with the standard antibiotic (Gentamicin) by measuring zone of inhibition (in mm). It was observed that plant coated Ag nanoparticle extract showed relatively higher antibacterial activity against Gm-ve bacteria as compared to Gm+ve bacteria that may be attributed to the morphology and chemical constituent of their cell wall.

Keywords: Antibacterial activity, Bacopa monnieri L., Characterization, Silver Nano-particles.
