Abstract

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS OF XIMENIA AMERICANA LEAVES

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was study of chemical composition and antibacterial activities of the essential oils of Ximenia Americana leaves. The essential oil of Ximenia Americana leaves obtained by hydro distillation was characterized by its phytochemical screening, infrared absorption spectrum and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) profiles. The average oil yield was 0.27 ± 0.29/300 gram of dry sample. The biological activity of the plant leaf oil on several microbes that cause infectious diseases was studied. The essential oil showed a high antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococusaureu and Staphylococuspyogenes and average effectiveness against Pseudomonas aeuruginosa. Therefore, the parsley leaf oil is a potential source of natural antibacterial compounds which are used for the treatment of various diseases caused by microbes (antibacterial agent).
