ABSTRACT

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women with reproductive age and associated with many comorbidities. Aim: To determine the circulating lipid profile and oxidative stress markers in women with PCOS. Materials and methods: A case control study was conducted and included 100 women with PCOS who were recruted from patients attending Kalar General Hospital. Their age's ranged between 18 to 45 years and a control group that included 50 apparently healthy women selected from medical staff. The levels of serum triglycerides(TG),total cholesterol( TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol( LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL) were measured by colorimetric method. Malondialdehyde (MDA) as oxidative stress marker was measured by TBA assay method. Results: The levels of serum TG, TC, LDL-C and VLDL-C, LDL/HDL, NHDL/HDL, TC/HDL ratios and Atherogenic Index were significantly increased and HDL-C was significantly decreased in PCOS patiants compared to controls. MDA significantly increased in PCOS women compared to controls. Conclusion: Women with PCOS demonstrated metabolic and oxidative stress abnormality.
