ABSTRACT

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Gardenia resinifera Roth plant parts were evaluated by using In vitro anti-lipid peroxidation assay (using TBARS), Ferricreducing power (FRAP) assay, Inhibition of Nitric oxide radical, Ferric thiocyanate (FTC) method, DPPH Radical-Scavenging activity, and ABTS radical cation scavenging activity. The total phenolic content (TPC) from extract was also quantified using Folin - Ciocalteu’s method with minor modifications. The alcoholic extract of Gardenia resinifera Roth. leaves and latex showed significant antioxidant potential in all the assays performed. Total phenolic content of the extract in 1000 μg/ml was equivalent to 200 μg/ml of gallic acid. Thus, results obtained suggested significant antioxidant activity of alcoholic extract of Gardenia resinifera Roth. leaves and Latex.

Keywords: Gardenia resinifera Roth, Dikamali, Antioxidant assays, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC).
