Abstract

ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF DIFFERENT SOLVENT EXTRACTS OF CEROPEGIA PUSILLAIN IN VITRO TUBER (WIGHT AND ARN.) AN ENDEMIC, MEDICINAL PLANT

ABSTRACT

The present study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of different solvent extracts (Hot aqueous extract, Methanol, Ethanol, Acetone, Chloroform) at different concentrations (40μl, 60μl, 80μl and 100μl) of the endemic medicinal plant, Ceropegia pusilla against five different bacterial strainsnamely, Shigella sonnei MTCC 2957, Klebsiella pneumoniae MTCC 109, Escherichia coli MTCC 118, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300 and Bacillus sp., by Agar well diffusion method. The methanol extract of C.pusilla, in vitro tuber in the concentration of 100μl shows good antibacterial activity against E.coli, Klebsiella sp.,and Staphylococcus aureus, whereas the C.pusilla concentration of ethanol extract effectively inhibits the test strains E. coli, K. pneumoniae, Bacillus sp., and S. sonnei.,The acetone extract of this plant in the concentration of 100μl effectively inhibits the growth of E.coli, K.pneumoniae., and S. sonnei., The lower concentrations including 40μl,60μl,80μl of methanol, ethanol and acetone extracts showed only moderate antibacterial activity against the bacterial strains. The hot aqueous extract and the chloroform extract of this plant did not show any significant antibacterial activity against the test bacterial strains.On the basis of this experimental result, it can be concluded that methanol, ethanol and acetone extracts of C. pusilla in higher concentrations could be considered for further isolation and evaluation as therapeutic antibacterial agent.
