Abstract

LEVELS OF SERUM CALCIUM ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE AND URINARY HYDROXYPROLINE IN POST MENOPAUSAL WOMEN

ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis is the term used for diseases that cause a reduction in the mass of bone per unit volume and is one of the dreaded afflications of ageing. it is a silently progressing metabolic bone disease widely prevalent in post menopausal women in India. Osteoprorosis increases bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures. This study was conducted to evaluate the role of serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase and urinary hydroxyl proline in postmenopausal women. Case control study was conducted in 70 women (40 postmenopausal women as cases, 30 premenopausal women as controls) serum calcium, ionized calcium, serum estradiol, serum alkaline phosphatase urinary hydroxyproline were estimated in both cases and controls. There was decrease in serum estradiol levels in postmenopausal women when compared to premenopausal women. Estrogen deficiency induces bone loss similarly ALP was increased in postmenopausal women which was significant P<0.001, there was decrease in serum calcium levels in postmenopausal women which was significant p value <0.01 and urinary hydroxyl proline was increased in postmenopausal women which was significant p value 0.0001.
