IN VITRO ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME EXTRACTS FROM THE ALGAE ULVA LACTUCA AGAINST PATHOGENIC BACTERIA

ABSTRACT

India is a peninsular land with an extensive sea coast. The commonly available biodiversity is macro algae commonly called seaweeds. The potentials of this resource remains unexploited. Ulva lactuca is a common green algae for consumption as food, fertilizer etc in many parts of the world. In the present study antibacterial activity of the seaweed extracted from three different solvents such as cold ethanol, cold petroleum ether and cold ammonia solution were checked against bacteria by well diffusion method. The cold ethanol extract of U. lactuca showed broad spectrum of antibacterial activity when compared to other solvent extracts.
