CHARACTERISTICS OF INTRAOCULAR LENSES CAUSING POSTERIOR CAPSULE OPACIFICATION (PCO)-SHORT COMMUNICATIONS

ABSTRACT

A one year retrospective analysis was done to determine the properties and material of intraocular lenses (IOL) associated with posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Data was traced from the registry of patients who underwent yag capsulotomy, and the details of the type of intraocular lenses used was traced from the folders. Characteristics of the IOLs such as hydrophobic/hydrophilic, material whether acrylic /polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), single piece/multiple pieces and whether spherical/aspherical were noted. The properties of IOL related to the development of PCO were studied. We found that hydrophobic, single piece, acrylic, aspheric IOLs were associated with a higher incidence of PCO.
