ABSTRACT

Simple, accurate and precise spectrophotometric methods were developed for simultaneous determination of Cefixime and Dicloxacillin in combined pharmaceutical dosage form by four different methods. Method A was Simultaneous Equation Method, involves the measurement of absorbance at two wavelengths 238 nm (λmax of cefixime) and 224 nm (λmax of dicloxacillin). Method B was Q-absorbance ratio method, involves the formation of Q-absorbance equation at 228 nm (Iso absorptive point) and 238 nm (λmax of cefixime). Method C was Dual Wavelength Method, the wavelengths selected for determination of cefixime were 230 nm and 244 nm, whereas, the wavelengths selected for determination of dicloxacillin were 218.5 nm and 238.5 nm. Method D was First Order Derivative Spectroscopy, wavelengths selected for quantization were 235 nm for cefixime (zero crossing point for dicloxacillin) and 268.0 nm for dicloxacillin (zero crossing point for cefixime).0.1N NaOH solution was used as solvent. All the four methods obeyed the Beer’s linearity in the range of 3-15μg/ml for cefixime and 5-25 μg/ml for dicloxacillin. The proposed methods were successfully applied to the determination of these drugs in commercial tablets. The results of the analysis have been validated statistically by recovery studies.

Keywords: Simultaneous equation method, Q-absorbance ratio method, Dual wavelength method, First Order Derivative Spectroscopy.
