Abstract

EVALUATION OF IN VITRO ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY, NUTRITIONAL PROFILE AND PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF RHODODENDRON ARBOREUM

Sarla Saklani and Subhash Chandra*

ABSTRACT

In the present study, we investigated In vitro antimicrobial activity, nutritional value and phytochemical screening of different fractions (petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanolic and water) of flower part of Rhododendron arboreum. The antimicrobial activity of the different fractions of Rhododendron arboreum flowers was studied against ten (gram negative and gram positive) bacteria. The methanolic fraction of flower part of Rhododendron arboreum was found to exdifferenthibit potent in vitro antimicrobial activity. The methanolic fraction showed maximum zone of inhibition in these bacteria (20±1mm, 19±1mm and 17±1mm) Staphyloccus aureus ˃ Staphyloccus epidermidis ˃ Escherichia coli. The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Rhododendron arboreum flowers extract was 60μg/ml against Staphyloccus aureus. Phytochemical screening of plant shows for the presence of glycosides, flavonoids, phenols, resin and tannins.

Keywords: Burans, nutrients, antimicrobial activity and phytochemical screening.
