Ravindra Babu Sajja* and Sraddha Bhaskari D

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of ethanolic extract of Desmostachya bipinnata whole plant (EDB) in alloxan induced diabetic rat model in which the rats were treated with alloxan (150mg/kg, i.p). The study was carried out on a 14 day protocol and the parameters monitored were blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, SGOT, SGPT, ALP, creatinine, urea, uric acid, body weights and oral glucose tolerance were evaluated.. Our study clearly indicated that the ethanolic exract of Desmostachya bipinnata whole plant showed significant antidiabetic activity at both doses (200mg/kg and 400mg/kg) as significant decrease (P<0.05) in Blood glucose, cholesterol,TG,SGOT, SGPT, ALP, urea, uric acid and creatinine levels was observed. The ethanolic exract of Desmostachya bipinnata whole plant also showed significant increase (P<0.05) in body weight when compared with diabetic control rats. The results indicated that the whole plant extract of Desmostachya bipinnata at high dose (400mg/kg) exhibited significant (P<0.05) antihyperglycemic activity than low dose of (200mg/kg) of whole plant extract in diabetic rats.

Keywords: Desmostachya bipinnata, Alloxan, SGOT, Cholesterol.
