ABSTRACT

Background: The field of statistical computing is relatively recent and basically involves the analysis of data using computers. These database tools are now being extended and applied to the health care system. A well established surveillance system is the backbone for any infection control program. Aim: The aim of this study was to apply the EPI Info software so as to study the influence of different risk factors on Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) among the Surgical Gastroenterology Department (SGE) patients at Nizam’s Institute of Medical sciences, Hyderabad, India. Methods and Materials: The CDC’s Epi Info version 5, 2002 was downloaded from the CDC Website “www.cdc.gov/epiinfo” and stored in the PC. A customized proforma that included age, gender, obesity, type of admission, habits like smoking, alcoholism, underlying chronic illnesses like diabetes mellitus, malignancy, renal failure and serum albumin less than 3 mg/dl, preoperative stay for more than 3 days, previous interventions, ongoing immunosuppressive therapy such as steroid use (for chronic medical condition), duration of surgery and type of wound that probably can cause SSIs data were collected from 1007 cases that underwent surgery. All the above risk factors were created in make view component of Epi Info software and the data was entered in the Epi info software. Results: Both univariate and multivariate logistic analysis were done by using analysis data component. In Multiple logistic regression analysis the type of wound, emergency surgery, presence of diabetes mellitus, previous interventions at the same site and duration of surgery for more than T hours were significant predictors for SSIs in gastrointestinal surgery. Conclusions: The analysis of risk factor for SSI was made easier and also quicker (with in minutes) by using Epi Info software and avoided undue delay by going through the whole surveillance data.

Keywords: Computer, Software, database, surveillance.
