ABSTRACT

Aim: the aim of the present study was to clinically evaluate the efficacy of herbal dentifrice in the reduction of dental caries compared against commercially available fluoride containing dentifrice. Materials and methods: A total of Thirty three healthy albino rats were included in the study. All the rats were inoculated orally, with 0.5 ml of glucose nutrient broth culture of Streptococcus viridansand then fed a cariogenic 60% sucrose sugar in addition to rat pellets. The animals were then randomly divided into 3 groups (n=11).Group A (plain water) had daily molar teeth brushing with water, while Group B had molar teeth brushing daily with Himalaya Herbal toothpaste® and Group C had molar teeth brushing using Colgate® toothpaste. The tooth brushing was administered for 10 weeks after which the animals were sacrificed, the jaws separated and the molar teeth scored for dental caries. Results: The results showed a significant (p <0.05) caries reduction of 59.74% by the Himalaya Herbal toothpaste® toothpaste and 41.32% by Colgate®. This reduction suggested the better inhibitory role of the experimental herbal dentifrice Himalaya Herbal toothpaste® in caries development.

Keywords: Dental caries, Dentifrices, Herbal toothpaste, Fluoride toothpaste.
