Abstract

EVALUATION OF TINOSPORA CORDIFOLIA MUCILAGE AS A NOVEL TABLET BINDER

Yogesh Joshi*, Aarti Bhatt, Punit Bisht, Divya Juyal, Satyanandam Sade

ABSTRACT

The study was designed to formulate oral tablet dosage form of Paracetamol using mucilage extracted from Tinospora cordifolia as a novel binding agent. Isolated mucilage was subjected to preliminary physicochemical characterization and Paracetamol graunles were prepared by wet granulation method. Four formulations each containing 300mg of Paracetamol were prepared using different mucilage concentrations viz. 2.5, 5, 7.5 & 10 % w/w. Lactose was used as diluent while magnesium stearate and talc were employed as lubricant and glidant respectively. Pre-compression parameters like angle of repose, bulk density, tapped density, hausner’s index and carr’s index were evaluated for granules while post-compression parameters like tablet thickness, hardness, weight variation, friability, content uniformity, disintegration time, and in-vitro drug release study were evaluated for tablets. Pre-compression and post-compression evaluation showed that parameters evaluated were all found to be within the pharmacopoeial limits. Among all the formulations, T-2 and T-4 showed an optimum drug release of 94.45 % and 94.22 % over the period of 60 min respectively and thereby showed a satisfactory drug release for oral Paracetamol tablets.

Keywords: Tinospora cordifolia, preliminary physicochemical characterization and Paracetamol graunles.
