Abstract

NOVEL DEHYDROACETIC ACID BASED HYDRAZONE SCHIFF’S BASE METAL COMPLEXES OF FIRST TRANSITION SERIES: SYNTHESIS AND BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION STUDY

ABSTRACT

In search of a new series of potential biologically active agents, syntheses of metal complexes of dehydroacetic acid (DHA) based tridentate hydrazone Schiff’s base that is 4-Hydroxy-N'-(1-(4-hydroxy-5-methyl-2-oxo-2H-pyran-3-yl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide (PDLH) with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Mn(II) Zn(II) has been achieved successfully. The Schiff‘s base was prepared by treating DHA with 4-hydroxybenzoylhydrazide under reflux in methanol. All the synthesized compounds were characterized on the basis of the results obtained from elemental analysis, 1H and 13C NMR, IR, UV visible spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and conductance. IR spectra of complexes revealed that ligand coordinated through N and O donor atoms. The mass spectrum of complexes also supported the formation of desired compounds. The UV visible spectrum revealed that complexes adopted octahedral geometry around the metal ions for all the synthesized compounds. Finally, all the synthesized compounds were tested for DNA photocleavage activities using plasmid DNA and anti-bacterial potential against four pathogenic strains of bacteria. In general metal complexes were found to be more potent biological agents as compared to ligand under the identical experimental condition and Cu(II) complex, particularly was found to exhibit potential nuclease and anti-bacterial activities.
