Abstract

EVALUATION OF PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND CYTOTOXICITY OF CAMELLIA SINENSIS IN BHK-21 CELLS

ABSTRACT

Medicinal plants have been a major source of therapeutic agents for alleviation and cure diseases. Camellia sinensis is a common medicinal plant used in traditional medicine of India found in the region of Patwadangar, near Nainital in Uttarakhand.This plant has been traditionally useful in treating inflammation, asthma, and heart diseases, lowering blood sugar and fighting cancer. It is also useful in wound, ulcer, cough, bronchitis, burning sensation etc. For the present study aqueous extract of Camellia sinensis leaves was prepared as cold extraction method. Ether and ethanolic (EtOH) extracts were prepared in Soxlet’s apparatus and dried in vacuum evaporator. The BHK-21 cell growth was inhibited within 24hrs; ethanolic and ether extracts showed better response than aqueous extract. On microscopic examination clumping of cells, degeneration, rounding and shrinkage of cells were observed. The concentration of 10mg/ml of ether extract showed high anticancer activity.
