Abstract

IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF CHLOROPHYTUM BORIVILIANUM (SANTAPAU & FERNANDEZ)

ABSTRACT

A lots of research work has been done on the use, properties, characteristics and sources of antioxidants especially phenolic compounds, vitamins, flavonoids, manmade chemicals and other micronutrients began in the late 18th century. Since then antioxidant research has received considerable attention and over a hundred thousand papers have been published on the subject. This has led to a common use of antioxidants in order to try to obtain and preserve optimal health. However, some research outcomes have led to the belief that antioxidants exist as mythical biomolecules. The present communication deals with in vitro analysis of antioxidant properties of Ethanol and Aqueous Extracts ofChlorophytum borivilianum as an important medicinal plant. Ascorbic Acid is a standard antioxidant is used as control in experiment. In this study, two different antioxidant activities (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging (DPPH) and Hydrogen peroxide-scavenging model of Ethanol and Aqueous Extracts of C. borivilianum were performed. It was found that Ethanol Extract of aerial parts of Chlorophytum borivilianum showed high scavenging activity in compare to of Aqueous extract of Chlorophytum borivilianum in both the experiments . Finally it can be concluded that Chlorophytum borivilianum is a promising antioxidant
