Abstract

AN OVERVIEW OF THE SURROGACY PROCESS

Prasanthi Ramineni, Naga Lekhini Ravi*, Sindhuri M and Venkata Rao V

ABSTRACT

A surrogacy arrangement or surrogacy agreement is the carrying of a pregnancy for intended parents. There are two main types of surrogacy, gestational surrogacy and traditional surrogacy. In gestational surrogacy, the pregnancy results from the transfer of an embryo created by IVF, in a manner so the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the surrogate. Gestational surrogates are also referred to as gestational carries. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is impregnated naturally or artificially, but the resulting child is genetically related to the surrogate. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of the surrogate and intended mothers and to determine the efficacy of this method and the satisfaction of the people involved and the likely problems which may surface between the two parties involved and the related solutions. Also, as a result of this research the socio – cultural differences and the psychological differences/similarities of the surrogate and intended mothers were revealed.

Keywords: IVF, surrogacy, child.
