Vijay R, Sharmila K P, Suchetha Kumari N, Pushpalatha K C*

ABSTRACT

Background: Salvia hispanica L. is an annual plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family native to Mexico and Guatemala. Salvia hispanica L., with the popular name chia, is a low water user plant and well adapted to arid and semiarid climates. It is currently not grown on a large scale. AIM: The Aqueous extract of Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) Seeds were screened for their phytochemical and antioxidant activity. In vitro antioxidant properties of the extract were analyzed by DPPH, OH radical scavenging, Reducing power assay and Lipid peroxidation assays. RESULTS: The preliminary phytochemical tests revealed that seed contained phytoconstituents such as Cardiac glycoside, tannins, terpenoids and Saponifible lipids, which also possess antioxidant activity. All values were expressed as Mean±SD of two measurements. Comparison between standard and extracts were performed by using Students‘t’ test. CONCULSION: The Seed extract tested, showed good radical scavenging, reducing property and lipid peroxidation activity. Further studies are required to clarify the in vivo potential of these seeds in the management of human diseases resulting from oxidative stress.

Keywords: Salvia hispanica L, Phyochemicals, Antioxidants, Lipid peroxidation.
