ABSTRACT

Aim-The objective of the present investigation was to study hepatoprotective activity of fruit extract of Embelia tsjeriam-cottam in carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in Wistar rats. Materials and methods- Liver damage was produced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) (1ml/kg-1 1st & 3rd day of week for a period of 60 days in groundnut oil (1:1v/v) p.o.) The Plant extracts (200mg/kg, p.o.) were administered every 24 hrs from day 1 to 60. At the end of the study the marker enzymes in serum, lipid profile (Cholesterol, triglyceride, VLDL and HDL) and histopathological analysis were carried out. Further the effects of the extracts on lipid peroxidation (MDA), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were estimated. Results-The alcoholic (AlE) as well as aqueous extract (AqE) showed significant hepatoprotective activity. The efficacy of alcoholic extract was almost comparable to that of standard.

Keywords: Embelia tsjeriam-cottam; Hepatoprotective; carbon tetrachloride; alcoholic (AlE); aqueous extract (AqE)
