ABSTRACT
From the past few years there is increasing research interest on the
natural compounds, due to their wide variety of pharmacological
activities. The main aim of the present study was to evaluation anti
ulcer activity of Carissa Carandas. For gastric ulcer many marketed
products are available like Cimetidine, Famotidine, Ranitidine,
Sucralfate, Prostaglandins, Omeprazole, Anticholinergics but many
case studies shows that they having many major side effects likes;
PPIs having higher risk of fracture, alter the iron absorption and causes
iron deficiency anaemia, risk of vitamine B12 deficiency. Both H2
receptor antagonist and Proton Pump Inhibitors have major effect on cardiac system it’s
prolong atrioventricular conducting time, sinus arrest, sinus bradycardia and higher risk of
community acquired pneumonia. New drugs Famotidine and Nizatidine shown decrease
stroke volume and also shows negative chronotropic effect.
This anti ulcer activity was studied using different extracts of Carissa Carandas like Petether,
Chloroform, Alcohol, Aqueous on different models of gastric ulcer, such as acetic acidinduce
chronic gastric ulcer, pylorus ligation and ethanol induce acute gastric ulcer. These
extract was administered orally with the dose of 500mg/kg. All extracts increased the healing
of acetic acid induced chronic gastric ulcers (P< 0.05). But alcohol extract was more
significant when it compare with standard (P< 0.001). In the case of pylorus ligation and
stress induce ulcer showed significant anti ulcer activity (P< 0.05). So we conclude that
alcoholic extract of Carissa Carandas shows more significant anti ulcer activity.
Keywords: anti-ulcer, Carissa carandas, acetic acid induce ulcer model, pylorus ligation.
