ABSTRACT
The present study is carried out to perform the in vitro total antioxidant
assay, total phenolic content, DPPH assay, reducing power assay, nitric
oxide scavenging activity and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity
of ethanolic extract from pennate diatom, Nitzschia longissima. The
total phenolic content of Nitzschia longissima was 1.72 ± 0.13μg/ml
and the total antioxidant assay was observed as 47.59 ± 0.40 %. The
ethanolic extract of Nitzschia longissima showed 75.36 ± 1.90% in
DPPH assay, reducing power assay of 77.81 ± 1.22%, nitric oxide
scavenging activity of 61.46 ± 1.30% and the hydrogen peroxide
scavenging activity of 80.67± 1.20%. Based on the activities assay
conducted in the present study and revealed that Nitzschia longissima
can be act as natural antioxidant source for food preservation and protection from
degenerative diseases.
Keywords: Marine diatom, total antioxidant assay, total phenolic content, DPPH assay, reducing power assay, nitric oxide scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity.
