A NEW DRUG APPLICATION FOR ONCE DAILY FORMULATION OF CIPROFLOXACIN CONTROLLED RELEASE TABLET BY OSMOTIC TECHNOLOGY

Abbineni Anusha*, Adimulapu Anil Kumar

ABSTRACT

Acute urinary tract infections are among the most commonly encoured bacterial infections in clinical practice. All most half of all women experience at least one urinary tract infection in their life time. The current standard therapy uncomplicated urinary tract infection indicates an increasing need for alternative safe and effective Fluroquinolinetherapy. Ciprofloxacin HCl is a short elimination half life a narrow absorption window and is mainly absorbed in proximal areas of GIT .The purpose of this study was to develop controlled release once daily formulation 1000 mg is necessary to achieve a steady state blood level or tissue level for an extended period which will be therapeutically effective and nontoxic for treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection. So it is difficult to formulate 1000mg Ciprofloxacin Hcl Once Daily Dosage form which gives drug release up to 24 hr at zero order. Osmotically control drug delivery system to a large extent is independent of the physiological factors of GIT.Final optimized formulation was studied for effect of pH of dissolution media, agitation intensity and osmotic pressure of dissolution media. There is no effect of pH of dissolution media and agitation intensity on dissolution.Optimized formulation was found to release above 94% of at a zero order rate for 23 hr.

Keywords: Uncomplicated urinary tract infections, Osmotic controlled drug delivery system, once daily dosage form.
