ABSTRACT
Introduction: A new bacteriological medium, Soychunk Extract Agar(SEA) was developed in this study using soychunk extract as asubstitute for peptone. Methods : Efficacy of the medium wasevaluated by growing stock cultures as well as clinical specimens inthe SEA and comparing the results with conventional media. Results : There was 100% conformity in the growth rate and colonymorphology. Anti microbial susceptibility testing by Kirby Bauermethod also revealed similar results in comparison with Muller HintonAgar . Certain characteristics like lactose fermentation andpigmentation were very well appreciated on SEA. This medium has got a very good shelflife. Regarding cost effeciveness, SEA was found to be very economical. Conclusion : SEAhas proved to be a simple, efficient and economically feasible medium which can effectivelyreplace the peptone based conventional media.
Keywords: Culture media, soy agar, peptone.
