Abstract

EFFECT OF GAMBIA ALBIDUM LEAF EXTRACTS ON DRUGINDUCED OXIDATIVE STRESS

ABSTRACT

The rate of formation of malndialdehyde(MDA) as a measure of lipid peroxidation of erythrocytes was investigated before and after induction of oxidase stress with sodium nitroprusside,carbon tetrachloride and ferrous sulphate.MDA level was also measured after administering water,chloroform,petroleum ether and ethanol extracts of Gambia albidum leaves.Before induction of oxidative stress(OS), the mean MDA level of the blood was 0.398+/-0.009 nmlhr-1.After induction,the mean MDA levels were 2.064+/-0.087 nmohr-1for sodium nitroprusside,0.817+/-0.320 nmolhr-1for CCL4 - and 2.462+/- nmolhr-1 for FeSO4 respectively. On administration of water extract, the mean MDA levels were 0.782+/-0.134 nmolhr-1 ,0.784+/-0.010 nmolhr- 1 and 2.462+/-0.018 nmolhr-1 in the blood samples in which OS was induced with sodium nitroprusside,CCL4 and FeSO4 respectively.On administration of chloroform extract the mean MDA levels were 1.322+/-0.080 nmolhr-1,0.565+/-0.010nmolhr- 1 and 2.390+/-0.014 nmolhr-1 in the blood samples,in which OS was induced with sodium nitroprusside,CCL4 and FeSO4 respectvely.On admninistration of petroleum ether extract,the mean MDA levels were 0.794+/- nmolhr-1,0.441+/-0.061 nmolhr-1 and 2.534+/-0.130 nmolhr- 1 in the blood samples,in which OS was induced with sodium nitroprusside,CCL4 and FeSO4 respectvely.On administration of ethanol extract,the mean MDA levels were 1.354+/-0.048 nmolhr-1,1.038+/-0.013 nmolhr-1 and 3.292+/-0.111 nmolhr-1 in which OS was induced with sodium nitroprusside,CCL4 and FeSO4 respectvely.Sodium nitroprusside induced higher level of MDA than FeSO4 and CCL4.All the extracts had their greatest anti-oxidant effects on sodium nitrprusside-induced oxidative stress,slight effects on CCL4-induced oxidative stress but no effect on oxidative stress induced by FeSO4.
