Abstract

ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY OF AERIAL PARTS OF XANTHIUM STRUMARIUM LINN.

Joghee Suresh*, Dhanya Rajan, Nagamani

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the alcoholic and water extracts of dried leaves and stems of Xanthium strumarium L. were subjected to anti-diabetic activity. Preliminary phytochemical investigation showed the presence of carbohydrates, amino acids, cardiac and Saponin glycosides, tannins and phenolic principles. The anti- diabetic potency was investigated by streptozotozin induced diabetic model (STZ) (45 mg/kg intraperitoneal) for 21 days. The induced diabetic rats exhibited high blood glucose level, cholesterol and triglycerides accompanied with weight loss. The continuous oral administration of the alcoholic and water extracts at the dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg for 21 days was able to lower the blood glucose level, cholesterol and triglyceride level. Partial improvement in histological appearance of pancreatic β cells was observed in STZ induced groups after 21days of treatment. The results indicate that, alcoholic extracts (EEXS) (250mg/kg and 500mg/kg) of Xanthium strumarium possess significant anti-diabetic activity (169.67±5.65), (158.2±4.6) than water extract (AEXS) in a dose dependent manner and presence of phenols, flavonoids and tannins are found to be responsible for the activity.
