ABSTRACT

Alkaloids include those natural products that contain nitrogen usually as a part of cyclic system. Many of the common drugs are alkaloid based. Plants alkaloids have also are served as models for modern synthetic drugs. About 20% of the species of flowering plants produce alkaloids. The high biological activity of alkaloids gives these compounds a special position among classes of natural substances. Toddalia asiatica.L. is an important medicinal plant growing in India and china and it is used as folklore medicine from 18th century. Toddalia asiatica (Linn) belongs to family Rutaceae. It is found striated in Kolli hills, Palani hills at the altitude of 36,000 ft. The stem was investigated for their alkaloidal constituents and biological activity. The invitro cytotoxicity of the crude alkaloidal fraction (CAF) against the Human Liver cancer cell lines (HEP G2) and Normal liver cell lines (LO2) were assayed. The cytotoxic effects of these crude alkaloid extracts were evaluated by MTT assay. The results showed that the crude alkaloid has good cytotoxic activity against Human Liver cancer cell lines and there is low effect on normal cell lines. This presents an updated view of the cytotoxic properties of the alkaloid extract of Toddalia asiatica.L.and their potential contribution to the development of anticancer agents.

Keywords: Alkaloids, Toddalia asiatica.L, cytotoxicity, cell lines, anticancer agents.
