Abstract

SCREENING OF THROMBOLYTIC (CLOT-BUSTING) ACTIVITY FROM GEOGRAPHICALLY SEPARATED TWO VARIETIES OF HONEY FROM INDIA: AN IN-VITRO APPROACH

Manukumar H.M*, Shruthi K.C

ABSTRACT

There is wide spread interest in drugs derived from plants as green medicine is believed to be safe and dependable, compared with costly synthetic drugs that have adverse effects. Hence the study was carried out to investigate the thrombolytic potential of honey a natural product, using an in vitro assay method. Five concentrations of the honey and incubation periods were used for the study, with a standard (Streptokinase), and negative control (sterilized distilled water) to validate the method. In the study, thrombolytic effect of honey (MF and PFf) was studied in vitro systematically. The results showed that honey played a significant role in thrombolysis in vitro. And the thrombolytic effects correlated with honey in a dose-dependent manner. The honey MF, PFf showed better clot lysis, i.e. 27.77, 40.15, 45.15, 49.66, 54.65 and 74.93%, 76.78%, 77.24%, 81.07% and 82.65% at incubation period 1, 5, 12, 24 and 48h and 1200 mg/ml maximum concentration respectively. While the standard (streptokinase) showed 88.41% maximum in 90 minutes of time period. Therefore, the obtained results suggest that the honey possess better thrombolytic activity in in- vitro; however, in vivo thrombolytic potentiality and active component(s) of the honey for clot lysis are yet to be discovered.
