Abstract

EVALUATION OF SAPONINS FROM SESBANIA SESBAN L. MERR FOR ITS ANTIFERTILITY EFFECT IN FEMALE ALBINO RATS

Payal Rahul Dande*, Chandrakant Bonde, Nancy Pandita

ABSTRACT

Saponins are natural glycoside compounds that exhibit structuredependent biological activities. Present study was undertaken to evaluate the saponins from Sesbania sesban leaf, at a dose of 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg, for possible antifertility activity in female albino rats of normal estrus cycle. The animals were observed for its effect on estrous cycle, implantation and further on abortive activity. The vaginal cornification & uterine weight assay was carried to determine the estrogenic activity of the saponin extract. Saponins from the leaves of Sesbania sesban showed highly significant dose dependent anti-implantation (56% & 86%) and abortifacient (75% and 92%) activity at both 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg (P<0.001) respectively. Saponin extract at both doses extended the estrous cycle and proestrous/diestrous phase in female rats. They showed an increase in the uterine weight and uterine diameter however they showed weak estrogenic effect when compared to the standard estradiol. The histological results further confirmed these results. The above observation suggests that saponins from Sesbania sesban, can become good applicant to be used as the emergency contraceptive.
