Abstract

ISOLATION OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS FROM ADHATODA VASICA AND INVITRO EVALUATION OF THEIR ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL

ABSTRACT

Objective: Adhatoda vasica is a popular plant with wide range of medicinal properties. The current study was intended to ascertain the bioactive compounds in the ethanolic extract of A.vasica by Gas- Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry. Further their antibacterial and antioxidant activity was also investigated. Materials and methods: The ethanolic extract of A.vasica leaves was subjected to column chromatography. The fractions were further eluted with chloroform; methanol mixtures and water and the subfraction obtained was subject to GC-MS analysis. It was analyzed for antibacterial and antioxidant activity. Results: The radical scavenging activity of the subfraction was maximum at 500μg/ml. The subfraction was found to be more potent against Klebsiella pneumoniae with the zone of inhibition of 54 mm. Conclusion: The present study concluded that the subfraction of ethanol leaf extract of A.vasica has revealed important bioactive compounds identified by GCMS with significant antibacterial and antioxidant activity. Further research is needed to isolate and characterize individual phytoconstituents from the subfraction with auspicious pharmacological activities.
