Abstract

STUDY OF PRESCRIBING PATTERN AND IMPACT ON PSYCHOSOCIAL HEALTH OF PATIENTS UNDERGOING HAEMODIALYSIS

ABSTRACT

Haemodialysis is the life sustaining treatment of choice for ESRD patients. Patients with CKD may have multiple comorbidities that require polypharmacy which needs to be properly monitored and are often predisposed to alterations in their physical and mental health. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the prescribing pattern and its safety as well as to determine the impact on psychosocial health of patients undergoing Haemodialysis. This Prospective cohort study was carried out at the nephrology department of a tertiary care teaching hospital for a period of six months.Patients were recruited as per the inclusion criteria. A predesigned proforma was used for data collection. Medications were classified into different groups on the basis of Anatomic Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification.Medication adherence and the prevalence of depression and insomnia in Haemodialysis patients were assessed using standard questionnaires.Safety of the prescribed pharmacotherapy was determined by checking Adverse drug reactions and Drug interactions using sophisticated softwares.A total of 100 patients were included in the study. The majority of the patients belonged to the age category of 65 and above.Male population was higher than the female population..The most prescribed drug in the study population was found to be cardiovascular drugs(25.8%).This was followed by Blood and blood forming agents(20.2%),Binding agents(15.2%),Antithrombotics(11.3%) and PPIs(6.8%). 88% of the patients were adherent to the treatment regimen.29% of the patients were found to have drug interactions and one of them had an ADR . Most of the patients undergoing HD were predisposed to depression and insomnia.
