Abstract

A RARE PEDIATRIC CASE OF CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE WITH TRICUSPID ATRESIA, ATRIAL AND VENTRICULAR SEPTAL DEFECTS AND SMALL PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS

ABSTRACT

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a problem with heart’s structure and function that is present at birth. These are of two types cyanotic heart disease (cyanosis of the body due to pumping of blood that contains less than normal levels of oxygen) and acyanotic heart disease (cyanosis of skin is not observed). Tricuspid atresia, septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus are some of the types of CHD. Symptoms may include cyanosis of skin and nails, heart murmurs, rapid beathing and heart rate, shortness of breath and fatigue. In this case study a 4months old pediatric male patient was admitted to hospital by his parents with the complaints of cyanosis of limbs, excessive cry with difficulty in breathing. Patient was known case of Complex Cyanotic heart disease with tricuspid atresia, atrial and ventricular septal defects and small patent ductus aeteriosus. Patient was treated with antibiotics, cardiac Glycoside s, β blockers, vitamin supplements and supportive therapy. After the course of treatment, patient was considerably stable. As clinical pharmacists we counselled parents of the patient regarding factors aggravating the disease, importance of medication adherence and dietary requirements. Regular visits to the hospital were advised.
