Abstract

PREVALENCE OF PREDIABETES AND ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS AMONG ADULTS IN YAOUNDE –CAMEROON

ABSTRACT

Objective: Prediabetes is the borderline of diabetes. Developing countries including Cameroon are facing the increasing prevalence of Diabetes it complications. The first initiative to limit the rise of this chronic disease is to identify the risk factors. The aim of this paper was to evaluate prediabetes prevalence and it risk factors among adults leaving in Yaounde, Cameroon. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted on one thousand and two fourty seven adults of both sex aged between18-60 years who were referred to the Andre Fouda Medical Fundation or the the Holy Spirit Medical Center Yaounde Cameroon in Yaounde from March 2014 to December 2016. Data collected included demographics and medical history of chronic diseases, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, blood lipid, and plasma glucose. Prediabetes was diagnosed using classified according to ADA definition Bivariate relationships between prediabetes and sex, obesity, age, hypertension was etablished and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identified pre-diabetes risk factors. Results: The overall prevalence of prediabetes was (15.03%) higher in women than in men. Through multivariate logistic, it appeared that female sex, overweight/obesity were the risk factors for prediabetes development. Conclusion: The prevalence of prediabetes was high in the studied population of Yaounde. Female sex, overweight, obesity and hypertension were the major risk factors. Public health education to improve awareness of diabetes is required, if not the prevalence of diabetes will increase among adults of Yaounde.
