Abstract

HEPATOPROTECTIVE AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY ON N-BUTANOL FRACTION OF PLANTS METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF NIGELLA SATIVA AND ECLIPTA ALBA LINN

ABSTRACT

Objective: The objective of the study is to separate and identify the most effective hapatoprotective fraction of methanolic extract of Nigella sativa and Eclipta alba by fractionating and evaluating its fractions for hapatoprotective activity in models on CCl4, Liver damage was induced in different groups of rats by administering 1:1v/v CCl4 in olive oil 1ml/kg.b.w.p.o, Pretreatment with fractions (toluene, 1-butanol, ethyl acetate at 100mg/kg.b.w) significantly reversed the changes in serum biochemical parameters All the fractions of Nigella sativa and Eclipta alba exhibited significant hepatoprotective activity and butanol (100mg/kg) was identified as the most effective fraction. It was also tested for antioxidant activity and phenolic contents determined by the measuring its capability for scavenging hydrogen peroxide radical, nitric oxide radicals (NO.) DPPH. proanthocyanidins, total phenols, the flavonoids, and total flavonols were higher. On the other hand, the FRAP contents were higher were similar and comparable to that of BHT, the standard antioxidant used. It shows potential antioxidant and exhibit significant hepatoprotectant.
