GENETIC STRUCTURE OF JAT SIKHS OF DISTRICT FARIDKOT

ABSTRACT
Genetic structure of Jat Sikhs of district Faridkot was investigated based on Phenylthiocarbamide (P.T.C) tasting ability, dermatoglyphics, ABO and Rh blood groups. 64% males and 59% females were tasters when tested for P.T.C tasting ability. Statistical treatment shows a non-significant difference between two sexes regarding the distribution of tasting ability. Frequency of various types of dermatoglyphic patterns on the individual digits of both hands in Jat Sikh males shows that whorls have maximum frequency on first digits of right hands followed by fourth digits of right hands. Fourth digits of left hands also have maximum frequency of whorls followed by first digits of left hands. Loops are present in greater frequency on fifth digits of left hands followed by third digits of left hands. In right hands loops have maximum frequency on fifth digits while first digits of right hands have minimum frequency. Arches are more frequent on second digits and third digits of right hands while first and fourth digits of right hands have minimum frequency. Second digits of left hands have maximum frequency of loops while fourth digits of left hands have zero frequency of loops. Only second digits and third digits of left hands have accidentals while no accidentals are observed on the rest of digits of both hands. In Jat Sikh females, whorls have maximum frequency on first digits of both right and left hands. Loops are present in maximum frequency on fifth digits of left hands but in right hands they have maximum frequency on third digits. Loops have minimum frequency on first digits of both hands. Arches in left hands have maximum frequency on second digits followed by third digits but fourth digits have zero frequency of loops in left hands. Second digits of right hands also have maximum frequency of loops while first and fourth digits of right hands have zero frequency of arches. Accidentals are present only in first digits of both hands. In ABO blood groups, blood group O had highest frequency (35.91%) followed by group B (35.21%), group A (21.13%) and group AB (7.74%). It is observed that gene O is most frequent (0.5998) followed by B (0.2440) and A (0.1560). Frequency of Rh(D) positives (84.5%) was higher than that of Rh(D) negatives (15.5%) in Jat Sikh population of Faridkot district.
