Abstract

ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY PATTERN AMONG BACTERIAL STRAINS ISOLATED FROM SOIL CONTAMINATED BY PAPER INDUSTRY AND ITS INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION

ABSTRACT

A number of pollutant waste sites have been generated in India resulting from buildup of organic contamination in soil and water over the year. As summarized by various authors’ bacteria isolated from polluted site showing good potential for the removal of a verity of toxic pollutants. In this study, soil sample which was affected by paper mill discharge were collected and analyzed for physic-chemical characteristics. The values of affected soil samples were significantly higher than the WHO standards. After isolation, screening of bacterial strains was based on rhizospheric properties such as phosphate solublization and lignolytic enzymes such as peroxidase and Laccase activity. The bacterial strains R-1, R-4, R-5, R-7, R8 and R-9 were showing positive results for phosphate solublization, strain R4, R5 and R9 showing phosphate solublization and peroxidase activity. The strains R1, R7, and R8 were showing all the properties. That’s why only six bacterial strains were subjected to next level. These screened strains were identified as R1: Bacillus pumilus; R4: Brevundimonas diminuta; R5: Aeromonas punctata; R7: Enterobacter hormaechei; R8: Citrobacter braakii; R9: Brevundimonas terrae. These strains were safe and have no any multi drug resistance. This result indicated that there is a wide application of these six bacterial strains in industrial sector and waste management sector.
