Abstract

TALONS CUSP ON THE LABIAL ASPECT OF PERMANENT TEETH

ABSTRACT

The term talon cusp refers to a relatively rare dental anomaly in which an accessory cusp like structure projects from the cingulum area or cementoenamel junction. The condition can occur in either maxillary or mandibular anterior teeth in both the primary and permanent dentitions. It occurs as a result of disturbances during the morphodifferentiation stage of tooth development. The etiopathogenesis is multifactorial and is polygenetic with some environmental influences. The lingual location on incisors, which frequently affects occlusion, is pathognomonic of the talon cusp. Labial talons are a rare entity. The treatment of talon cusp may be conservative or radical, depending on the accessory cusp like shape, location, size and tooth affected. We report two cases of labial talon cusp both in permanent maxillary anterior teeth, both of which are isolated anomaly rather than an integral part of any disorder.
