PANCHAKARMA- PREVENTIVE & PROMOTIVE HEALTH CARE TREATEMENT OF GERIATRIC DISEASES

ABSTRACT
Geriatrics is the branch of medicine concerned with the care and
treatment of elderly. Geriatric care has to address two-fold problems,
firstly the basic anti-aging care to retard the rate of physiological
ageing and secondly the medical management of diseases specifically
occurring in old age. Innate desire every human being whether a saint
or a common man is to attain a long a healthy life. The World
population of the elderly is increasing over including India. It is now
felt necessary to develop newer strategies for Geriatric health care.
Accordingly Geriatrics is emerging as a major medical specialty
globally. The conventional modern medicine is apparently strong in
terms of the second aspect, although the final outcome may not be as
significant. Ayurveda, on the other hand has got the potential for prevention of diseases by
promotion of health and management of diseases occurring in old age. Ayurvedic System of
Medicine offers an excellent line management for ageing problem. Panchakarma presents a
unique approach of Ayurveda to the therapy with specially designed five procedures of
internal purification of the body including the gross channels up to the subtlest levels. Such
purification permits the biological system to return to normalcy and to rejuvenate
spontaneously and also facilitates the desired therapeutic effects to curative remedies
administrated thereafter. Disease pacifying treatment should be planned according to disease
affected; mostly the Geriatric disorders have flourished during old age which is the best
period for vitiation of Vata dosha and sarva dhatu kshaya. This paper deals with the
Panchakarma procedures and its effect in the geriatrics diseases.
