Abstract

ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY PATTERN OF MRSA ISOLATES FROM THE STAFFS OF AL-KHOMS TEACHING HOSPITAL, LIBYA

ABSTRACT

Staphylococcus aureus infections are a major problem in the hospitals. The multi drug resistant and the nasal carriages play a key role in the epidemic of these infections. The aim of the study was to find out the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of MRSA isolates from the staffs of Al-khoms teaching hospitals, Libya. 150 samples of Nasal and Throat swabs were collected from the medical and paramedical staffs at Al-Khoms teaching hospital. Testing for methicillin resistance was performed using the cefoxitin disc diffusion method recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute and Latex agglutination test. Results showed that the prevalence of MRSA positive was in nasal swabs at 14.7% and throat swabs at 9.3% of tested individuals. Libyan nurses carried the highest rate of positive MRSA cases (72%). Antibiogram test of isolated MRSA strains showed that they were resistant to Penicillin, Ampicillin and sensitive to Vancomycin and Augumentin. Furthermore, regarding hospital-related infections, constant studies on monitoring antibiotic susceptibility patterns of MRSA should be performed.
