Abstract

ANALYTICAL AND MEDICINAL PROPERTIES OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF LEAVES OF CARISSA CARANDAS

ABSTRACT

Carissa carandas commonly known as Karanda , use in traditional system of medicine. It is used by tribal healers of Western Ghat region of Karnataka as hepatoprotective and antihyperglycemic..The present study has been designed to evaluate Ethanolic eextract f leaves for its medicinal properties. Traditionally the plant has been used in the treatment of scabies, intestinal worms, pruritus, biliousness and also used as antiscorbutic, anthelmintic. The biological activities reported are analgesic, anti inflammatory, anti pyretic, cardiotonic and histamine releasing.The plant is also an alternative source of oil, hydrocarbon and phytochemicals. - Root contains a trace amount of volatile oil with an odor similar to that of Piper betle leaf, salicylic acid, and an alkaloid. Study has reported carisone, carindone, carinol, lignin, oderoside and 2-acetylphenol from root materials. Leaves have yielded triterpenes, tannins and carissic acid. Fruits yield a mixture of volatile principles - 2-phenyl ethanol, linalool, ß-caryophyllene, isoamyl alcohol and benzyl acetate, and a novel triterpenic alcohol (carissol). Study of fresh leaves isolated four pentacyclic triterpenoids including a new constituent, carissin, and two previously unreported compounds.
