Abstract

BROMATOLOGICAL AND NUTRITIONAL SCREENING ON LEAVES OF TWO SPECIES OF ANTIDESMA L.

ABSTRACT

Wild edible plants play a significant role in the dietary requirements of the local communities of the Western Ghats region of Kolhapur district. Antidesma acidum Retz. and Antidesma ghaesembilla Gaertn. were used as vegetable and different plant parts used for several diseases. Leaves of both species were used as vegetable and dry leaves of A. acidum used with other food for acidic test, while mature fruits of both species used in preparation of pickle and ripened fruits eaten by people as Ranmeva. Leaves of A. acidum used in case of headache, as a appetizer, in antidiabetic treatment, while leaves of A. ghaesembilla used against stomachache, blood dysentery, muscular pain, pneumonia, dropsy, bite of rabies dog. Due to the dual significance of the plants was selected for the bromatological and nutritional analysis. Bromatological analysis was done by using methods of Association of Official Analytical Chemists while macronutrients and micronutrients were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Bromatological analysis of A. acidum leaves shows presence of high amount of moisture content while leaves of A. ghaesembilla shows high amount of dry matter, total ash, crude fiber and crude fat. Nutritional analysis of A. acidum leaves shows high amount of total carbohydrate as compared to A. ghaesembilla. Mineral analysis revealed in g/100g. A. acidum leaves shows high amount of nitrogen, magnesium Iron, and copper, while A. ghaesembilla leaves shows high amount of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sodium, manganese and zinc.
