Abstract

THE EFFECT OF AN ELECTROPLATING EFFLUENT ON GROWTH AND BIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TOMATO PLANT (LYCOPERSICON ESCULENTUM L.)

ABSTRACT

Industrial effluents are a major cause of heavy metal contamination. The present study is planned to determine the effect of an electroplating effluent at different dilutions as O%, 2.50%, 3.00%, 3.50%, 4.00% on the seed germination and growth and biochemical characteristics of tomato plant, growth parameters such as seed germination percentage, shoot and root length, number of flower, number of fruits, biochemical characteristics such as chlorophyll. Pot experiments have been conducted to know the growth at different effluent concentration and compared with normal water (control). The result clearly shows that the concentration of effluent directly affects on the growth parameter and biochemical characteristics with increasing concentration of Lead accumulation increases both in shoots and roots, the highest being in root when compared with control. Lead was found to be exceeded the maximum allowable limit approved by WHO/FAO (2001) for tomato plant.
