Abstract

SERUM LIPID PEROXIDATION, BLOOD PRESSURE AND RENAL PROFILE OF DIABETIC ISCHAEMIC STROKE SUBJECTS.

ABSTRACT

Acute Ischaemic Stroke (AIS) is characterized by elevated level of oxidative stress indices and renal impairement. Increased oxidative stress is thought to play a role in the development of AIS and its attendant complications. The current work evaluated serum fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, malondialdehyde, urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate in 37 diabetic ischaemic stroke (DIS) subjects admitted in Neuro ward of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, Nigeria and the results compared with 42 non-diabetic ischaemic stroke (NDIS) subjects. The results suggested significant increase (P<0.05) levels of FBS, SBP, MDA, urea and creatinine and no significant increase (P>0.05) level of potassium, it also showed no significant decrease (P>0.05) levels of DBP, Na+, HCO3 - and Cl- in diabetic ischaemic stroke (DIS) subjects compared with non-diabetic ischaemic stroke subjects. It is therefore, concluded that diabetic ischaemic stroke contributes more oxidative stress and renal impairements associated with AIS subjects, an indication that the DIS are predisposed to increased oxidative onslaught.
