Abstract

ANTAGONISTIC EFFECTS OF CHENOPODIUM ALBUM AGAINST SOME PATHOGENIC MICROBES IN NORTHERN RAJASTHAN

ABSTRACT

The in vitro antimicrobial activity of crude ethanolic and methanolic extracts of the plant parts (leaf, root & stem) of Chenopodium album was investigated. For antibacterial activities test, the extracts were subjected to its effectiveness against both Gram (+ve) and Gram (-ve) bacteria in disk diffusion method. The opportunistic Five bacterial strains were Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram negative) Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive) and two fungal (Aspergillus fumigatus, A. niger) strains. The zones of inhibition produced by the crude ethanol and methanolic extracts against few sensitive strains were measured and compared with those of standard antibiotics Streptomycin and Ampicillin. The extracts produced greatest inhibitory zone on E. coli and also showed against S. aureus one of the major wound infectious bacterial strain. The obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine as useful in biliousness, abdominal pains, eye diseases, throat troubles, piles, diseases of blood, the heart, the spleen and to prevent wound infections suggest its further investigation.
