Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SECONDARY METABOLITES OF PULSES

ABSTRACT

Secondary metabolites are naturally derived metabolites from plants and reported as a source of compounds for medicinal use of humans since time immortal. In this study we evaluated the secondary metabolites of pulses against antimicrobial activity of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) using the well diffusion method. Pulses contain noticeable amount of different secondary metabolites such as phytic acid, tannin, phenolics, trypsin inhibitor and lectin. Among these secondary metabolites, phytic acid of all pulses has shown considerable activity against all organisms tested. The inhibition zones of phytic acid ranged from 20 to 32 mm and maximum activity was found in green chickpea against S. aureus (32 mm). Only phenolics of green chickpea and lectin of arhar show activity against E. coli. on all tested pulses. To know the constituents of phenolics of green chickpea and brown chickpea using HPLC methodology we found gallic acid which is proved as a potent antioxidant and maximum concentration was reported in green chickpea as compared to brown.
