STUDIES ON ETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM CELLULOLYTIC WASTE

ABSTRACT
Cellulolytic microbes have important role in environment for degradation of cellulose & convert it in to useful products. This is mainly produced by Bacteria, Fungi & Protozoan that catalyze cellulolysis (i.e. Hydrolysis) of cellulose. Microorganisms play important role in the conversion of cellulolytic wastes in to valuable products like biofuels produced by fermentation. In the present study, cellulolytic bacteria were isolated from soil samples which were collected from college farm. Isolation of cellulose degrading bacteria on cellulose agar medium four isolates are isolated from soil (Isolate 1,2,3,4). Confirmation of cellulose-degrading ability of bacterial isolates was performed on the cellulose Congo-Red agar media. Isolate no.4 is fast growing organism so these can used for further study. Morphological and biochemical characterization study, The isolates
grown in mixed culture using basal salt medium in three different sets, one containing cellulose powder, second containing laboratory waste and third containing agricultural waste as substrate for production of cellulolytic enzyme and to initiate saccharification process. Selected bacterial isolate 4 was co-cultured with Saccharomyces cerevisiae for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. Ethanol production was positively tested after five days of incubation.
