FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION OF HEMOGLOBIN VARIANT AND ABO BLOOD GROUPS AMONG THALASSEMIA PATIENTS FROM IBN-AL-BALADI PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL IN BAGHDAD/IRAQ

ABSTRACT
Hemoglobin variants, ABO and Rhesus blood groups vary from one population to another. The study was designed to sample anemia Iraqi population for the purpose of updating information on the prevalence of abnormal hemoglobin variants, ABO and Rh blood groups. Blood group O were the most prevalent (59.1%) followed by groups A (19.1%), B (17.1%) and AB (4.8%). The percentage distribution for Rh positive was 89.6% and Rh negative 10.39% of the study population. The results showed that the highest prevalence percentage of hemoglobin variants was β-Thalassemia major (51%) followed by β- thalassemia intermedia (23.2%) and the least percentage was β-
thalassimia minor (7.5%). The allelic frequencies of O, A and B alleles in thalassemia major patients were 0.603, 0.212 and 0.185 While the allelic frequencies of O, A and B alleles in thalassemia minor and thalassemia intermedia patients were (0.656, 0.125 and 0.219) (0.6382, 0.1732 and 0.1885) respectively. The occurrence of the hemoglobin variants and the different ABO blood groups didint vary significantly.
