Abstract

HISTOLOGICAL CHANGES IN TESTIS OF SWISS ALBINO MICE FED CONTINUOUSLY WITH FOOD EXPOSED TO MICROWAVE RADIATIONS

ABSTRACT

Science and technology have been the integral part of human existence. In recent times use of electromagnetic radiations particularly non ionizing radiation –microwaves has increased by leap and bounce. Two gadgets based on this technology namely, cell phones and microwave ovens that had brought revolution in human life. Literatures related to microwaves available so far do not present the clear picture of biological effect of it. The present study was undertaken to understand the effect of microwave radiations on food. Food was microwaved at 320 watt for 10 minutes. Animals were divided in 3 groups- Control, Sham and Experimental. Experimental group was given microwaved food whereas sham group was given normal food in and in low quantity. The experimental group was administered with fixed amount of microwave exposed mice pellets daily for 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 week and 4 weeks recovery. The recovery group was given microwave pellets for 4weeks, thereafter given normal mice fed for 4 weeks. After the termination of each experiment the animals of each group, i.e. treated, sham and control, were sacrificed by cervical dislocation testis was collected. Collected tissue was washed in saline and then fixed in Bouin’s fluid. After dehydration tissue was processed in paraffin wax and then was cut in 5 microns thick sections. Staining was done with Haematoxylin and Eosin and then it was permanently mounted. Tubular Diameter decreased significantly in sham at all intervals, decrease in sham is greater than that of experimental. Slight improvement occurred in 4 week recovery group. Several histological changes were observed which increased with increased duration of intake.
