Abstract

SYNERGISTIC EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND LASER IRRADIATION ON SURVIVAL OF Pseudomonas aeruginosa ISOLATED FROM IRRADIATED INFECTED WOUNDS OF ANIMAL PATHOGENECITY MODEL

ABSTRACT

Background: multidrug – resistant P .aeruginosa nosocomial infections are increasingly recognized worldwid due primarily to a combination of low outer membrane permeability coupled to secondary resistance mechanisms such as an inducible β- lactamases. Many studies have demonstrated a bactericidal effect of laser irradiation toward bacteria . This tool as a new photochemotherapeutic has been utilized for different applications in various fields of biology and medicine.Methods:Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated and identified from wounds and burns of patients in Tikrit Teaching Hospital..Wound incisions were made in skins of Swiss albino mice were taken from Institute of the Biological and Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory (Baghdad).These wounds were infected with 105 bacteria/ml inoculums and exposed to a series of exposures to laser,photosensitizer and antibiotic according to a protocol designed for this experiment.The exposed pathogen was isolated from wounds and incubated at room temperature and at 37 0C for estimation of temperature effect on laser-injured pathogen. Results .It was found that most of the isolates were killed at 37 0C of incubation after laser irradiation but most of the irradiated isolates survived at room temperature. Conclusion: The present study revealed that a combination of laser irradiation exposure of Ps.aeruginosa was highly effective in killing of this pathogen at higher temperature like 37 0C which might be applicable for infected patients with this organism if they hospitalized in a room with elevated temperature.
