Abstract

EFFECT OF ANTITUBERCULAR DRUGS ON SERUM VITAMIN D CONCENTRATION IN TUBERCULAR PATIENTS

ABSTRACT

Background: Though there is a presence of efficient antitubercular treatment but some cases delayed recovery causes increase morbidity and mortality. Aim: determine the possibility of the changes in vitamin D levels after TB treatment to search the reason of delayed recovery in treatment of tuberculosis. Method: Six hundred and twenty two patients aged 20-40 with newly diagnosed TB were enrolled in this study. All the patients continued to receive Directly Observed Therapy (DOTS) with 2 months of 4 antitubercular drugs (Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Ethambutol and Pyrazinamide) followed by 6 months of Isoniazid and Ethambutol. Result: though the baseline serum vitamin D value was not significantly differ with first month of ATT but thereafter vitamin D concentration was gradually significantly low. Conclusion: Antitubercular treatment have been shown to reduce serum 25(OH)D which may increase the risk of delayed recovery in treatment of tuberculosis.
